Wednesday 3 November 2010  Managers within the Public Service together with officials from the National Insurance Property Development and Management Company Limited (NIPRO) recently held an emergency meeting to assess the ability of the civil service to continue serving the general public in the current post hurricane environment.

Following the meeting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of the Public Service Phillip Dalsou said the major concern is that of the availability of water.

“A number of matters were discussed that were critical to allowing citizens to continue to receive services from government.

“Based on that assessment there are certain water conservation measures that we need to put in place in terms of rationing of water. Water will be available at certain hours and managers will deal with these matters on a case by case basis ensuring that matters of government continue to be performed.”

Meanwhile, NIPRO's Chief Executive Officer, Roderick Cherry, has given the assurance that following NIPRO’s assessment it can be safely said that the buildings that house government offices along the John Compton Highway Waterfront area fared very well through the hurricane, registering only minimal water seepage.

“Following the passage of Tomas NIPRO was on the ground very early carrying out assessments of all our properties. These properties were the government buildings, including the car park and some of the police stations and fire stations as well.

“Our assessment continues and we will turn over reports later this week. In fact all of the structures remained sound. There are no structural issues.”

The NIPRO official says approval has been granted for the construction of a major water storage tank to furnish the government buildings and that project will be fast tracked in light of the current constraints.

NIPRO is the company responsible for the maintenance of the properties leased to government including some police and fire stations under the BOLT (Built Operated Leased and Transferred) arrangement.
