Wednesday 3 November 2010 – Prime Minister Stephenson King, at a meeting held at the Ministry of Communications and Works to discuss the recent devastation by Hurricane Tomas to the island, praised local utility companies for their efforts in attempting to restore services to affected customers in the shortest possible time.
“LUCELEC, the electric company, has been very active in reinstating the electricity supply in many communities working with tremendous speed in restoring electricity throughout the island. “The telephone companies have been working extremely hard and one company have brought in additional engineering to stabilize the system, while another has assured me that it is pretty much equipped to further activate the system in some of the southern communities where the system has failed during the last two days. Tomorrow both companies will have service—both land and cell phones.”
The prime minister also stressed the importance of restoring the country’s water supply to its pre-hurricane condition. In that regard, Mr. King announced plans to have further discussions with the managing director of WASCO to assist in any way possible to deal with challenges the company may face in returning to the population a consistent supply of potable water.
