Friday 5 November 2010  The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago came bearing gifts when she visited Saint Lucia last Friday to assess the impact of Hurricane Tomas.

During a courtesy call at the official residence of the Prime Minister, Honourable Kamala Persad-Bissessar disclosed that the government of Trinidad and Tobago had, as of Wednesday November 3, shipped several containers of relief supplies to Saint Lucia, as a demonstration of her government's commitment to assist neighbouring Caribbean countries in times of need.

“There are no strings attached to the humanitarian aid that we bring and will continue to send to Saint Lucia for the reconstruction efforts. For that humanitarian aid, we have partnered with our private sector. The companies that do business with Saint Lucia are very keen to help and of course for the reconstruction efforts the private sector is again willing to partner. The economic crisis have hit all of our countries and therefore we are prepared to assist in terms of the construction materials you may need for your housing, roadways, and bridges to whatever extent we can; Trinidad and Tobago we will make some supplies available to Saint Lucia.”

During her one day visit to Saint Lucia, which was dogged by some controversy, the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago visited the Barre d` Isle to get a first hand assessment of the destruction caused by Hurricane Tomas.

Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King said the visit was very important as it further solidifies the long-standing relationship between Saint Lucia and the twin-island republic.

“Let me take this opportunity to thank you for your practical commitment to Saint Lucia`s efforts at recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Tomas. Immediately after indicating to you  our immediate concerns,  within 24 hours you were able to put together a shipment of water particularly to commence your efforts in brining support to Saint Lucia.”

The first shipment of water and supplies from Trinidad and Tobago landed on Saint Lucia last Friday evening.
