Monday, November 15, 2010 –  Speaking during a visit to the Water Purification Unit installed at Marc by the Canadian relief agency Global Medic,  Minister for Communication, Works, Transport and Public Utilities and member of Parliament for Castries South East, Honourable Guy Joseph, commented on the contribution of bad solid waste practices and deforestation to the water shortage problem on the island.

“Looking at the situation and having to go back to the sources that we have used in the past, it highlights the area that we have spoken about quite a bit in the past—the issue of deforestation. We have also seen the issue that we are faced with in relation to the contamination of the water sources.

“The indiscriminate dumping of garbage in our waterways throughout communities around this country should awaken in us a sense of responsibility; the things in nature that we destroy are the very things that we need to keep us alive,” Joseph said.
