Wednesday 10 November 2010 – Minister for Communications, works, transport and public utilities, Honourable Guy Joseph, has been traversing the island to interface with residents and to see for himself the damage suffered by various communities, in the aftermath of Hurricane Tomas. The level of infrastructural damage, Mr Joseph says, is unprecedented, and as such, the country will have to access regional and international expertise during the rebuilding process.
“In terms of the assistance required we still need some technical assistance and redesigning of lots of the community and roadways within the country. A lot of the financial assistance is required in the rebuilding process in order to get us back to where we need to be.”
“Whilst there are several matters that must be dealt with, Mr. Joseph says the ministry will prepare a detailed priority list that will serve as a guide to government's approach to getting the country back to pre-hurricane Tomas conditions at the soonest.”
“The main area of concern deal specifically with the issues of reconstruction of roads, homes that were destroyed, and the restoration of the water supply to all of the communities in Saint Lucia.”
Mr. Joseph said schools are yet to open because many of them are still being used as emergency shelters.” |
