Monday 29 November 2010 – The Department of Gender Relations celebrated the International Day Against Violence Against Women this year with some success.
Director of the Department of Gender Relations Ms. Charms Gaspard, says incidents of domestic violence on the island have not escalated in 2010. The observation came as the department continues to advocate against the physical, emotional and psychological abuse of women and children. Ms. Gaspard, however, was quick to point out that there is no room for complacency and public sensitization should continue.
“We are getting a decrease in the number of cases, we're not sure yet what is happening, but we continue to preach and highlight that one case is one case too many. “This year's theme is “Get involved, unite to end violence against women”. Violence against women and children occurs every day in every country regardless of the status of development. It happens, not in every home, but it happens in homes where we least expect it to happen and it simply says that no one is safe and by virtue of the fact that you're a woman, you are more vulnerable to incidents of violence.”
According to Ms. Gaspard, working towards eliminating domestic violence against women and girls is the department’s foremost objective.
She called on citizens to play their part in ensuring a loving and caring society.
