Monday, May 10, 2010 The high incidents of diabetes and accompanying eye complications such as diabetic retinopathy is one of the reasons why the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association has expressed a public welcome to retina specialist Dr. James Miller. The doctor who will be in Saint Lucia during the week of the 10th of May to the 14th is expected to attend to a long waiting list.

Executive Director of the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association, Anthony Avril, says it is unfortunate that retina specialists have to be sourced from outside of Saint Lucia in order for retinopathy treatment to be made available to the public.

“He is volunteering his service to the country through the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association and will be available, looking for retinopathy in people who are suffering from diabetes,” Avril said.

“Diabetes is a major problem in Saint Lucia. Luckily we have in St. Jude Dr. Lal who has been coming annually and availing himself to the people from the south who have been making great use of his service.”

Diabetic retinopathy is characterised by a number of changes in the retina and often causes bleeding at the back of the eyes.
