Tuesday 18 May 2010 – The Saint Lucia School of Music has embarked on a fund-raising initiative that if successful, will enhance the school’s capability to keep its operations afloat. The Saint Lucia School of Music is subsidised by government, but says the school has been under some degree of strain in key areas such as providing and repairing of instruments needed for classes.
Ryan Finn, coordinator of wind studies and musicianship, says the school caters for approximately five hundred students at a minimal cost of $75.00 per term and also awards scholarships to students. In light of this and other overheads, he says the school must find creative ways of generating funds.
“We are trying to raise funds at the school of music to provide education for students. We have scholarships, we have about 15 students on full scholarship; they are able to study an instrument, voice and music theory as well. There are some of the star students in Saint Lucia as well those who otherwise wouldn't be given the opportunity to have music education.” A Saturday evening fund-raiser has been planned for Froggie Jack's Waterside Dining at Vigie.
The fund-raiser includes a full-course dinner and three hours of musical entertainment by the Saint Lucia School of Music, from 7-10 pm.
The fund-raising dinner will feature performances by lead local musicians Luther Francois, Emerson Nurse, Allison Marquee and the Saint Lucia School of Music, among others. |
