Monday, May 10, 2010 – Renowned Saint Lucian Jazz Musician Ronald 'Boo' Hinkson has commented on the broad spectrum of diverse musical genres that make up the offerings of Saint Lucia Jazz, noting firstly that the festival's viability rests with attracting as wide as possible a cross section of music fans.
The seasoned musician noted that other international jazz festivals from further afield also offer a variety of acts at their events.
“Montreal is a very traditional festival and Montreal recently had the reggae group “Third World” and they still called it the jazz festival. And Wolf Trap in Washington has a history of being a very traditional festival and they recently had “Steel Pulse”, another reggae group, yet the name of the festival has remained the same. I must also tell you that it is more and more difficult now to fill a major venue like with only jazz acts, because radio stations play very little main stream jazz now.”
Hinkson says a major consideration is to sustain a Caribbean flavour in the festival for Saint Lucians and fellow CARICOM members who also form part a significant component of the jazz festival audience every year. |
