Wednesday 19 May 2010 – Prime Minister Stephenson King has written to new British Prime Minister Right Honourable David Cameron to congratulate him on his ascension to the office of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom following the May 6th, 2010 General Elections. In his congratulatory letter Prime Minister King drew the attention of the new British Prime Minister to the many challenges facing small island states of the Caribbean many of which are former British colonies.

Some of the main issues highlighted by the Saint Lucian Prime Minister included Climate Change and other matters impacting sustainable development, international trade issues within the framework of the World Trade Organisation and our ability to export bananas and the Air Passenger Duty applied by the United Kingdom in November 2009.

The letter to Prime Minister Cameron concluded by expressing the intent of the Saint Lucian Government to work alongside Britain in helping to address many of the problems facing the international community. Prime Minister King particularly expressed the willingness of his Administration to build on the historic ties between the two nations and to exploit opportunities for the mutual benefit of both countries.

Prime Minister King in his letter communicated his desire to meet with the British Prime Minister in the near future for an exchange of views on issues of mutual concern.
