Friday 28 May 2010 – Parliamentary representative for Castries East Honourable Philip J. Pierre has suggested that the government and citizens must be mindful that the prevalence of crime be viewed as a national problem. The Castries East MP says no one place should be labelled because of incidents of crime, as this could lead to the creation of dichotomy in the country.
“We have to remove from our lexicon the word ghetto; we have to remove it. The ghetto ought to be in our minds and not where you live. If we don't we are just going to create two Saint Lucia's. What we need is one Saint Lucia that will lead us to a situation where we can look at the problems confronting our country and we can remove partisan politics.”
Mr. Pierre emphasised that dangerous elements of vindictiveness and revenge have crept into the society, and that, along with the pitfalls of frustration, anger, jealousy and greed has only served to fuel criminality in the society.
Mr. Pierre’s comments were made at a recent town hall meeting at the Entrepot Human Resource Development Centre, involving officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Castries East residents. |
