Tuesday, May 11, 2010 Social transformation minister, with responsibility for the Boys Training Centre (BTC), Honourable Lenard Spider Montoute, says there are several ongoing initiatives at the BTC, aimed at improving the environment at the Massade–based institution. One of the projects is the construction of two buildings.

“One is for the separation of wards; this new structure which is now nearing completion can accommodate twelve wards who are there for care and protection. The second structure which is now being built is divided into four units namely:  a time-out request room to safely restraint wards with serious behavioural problems, an isolation unit in case there is an outbreak of a contagious disease at the centre, a holding unit for new wards and  medical quarters to be used by medical personnel at the BTC.”

The ministry of social transformation is at present engaged in a new organizational structure for the BTC, which will include two social workers, and additional direct care workers.

“Eight new officers have been hired so far. A nurse to attend to the wards’ medical needs, counsellors, house parent, activities co-coordinator, teachers in mathematics, social studies, science, English and information technology, and an additional driver.”

Meantime, Mr. Montoute says a new juvenile centre to accommodate both girls and boys will be built during the current financial year.
