Thursday, May 6, 2010 – The Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association (SLBWA), is expressing concern over the myriad of problems confronting youth who are dealing with blindness or visual impairment. Executive Director of the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association Mr. Anthony Avril says in light of such concerns the association will host a seminar targeting such youth.
The main objectives of this seminar are to provide blind and visually impaired youth with an avenue to make their voices heard, share experiences with their sighted counterparts and to sensitize other youth organizations about the plight of their blind and visually impaired peers.
Mr. Avril says this seminar will be the centrepiece activity during Blindness Awareness Month observed annually in May.
“What we are doing this month is that we want to bring them together, a large group of them, blind and vision impaired youth together with their sighted peers so that they can have an instructive exchange. The exchange is designed to allow the blind and vision impaired to realise that the problems they are experiencing is also being experienced by their sighted peers and similarly their sighted peers can also realise that blind and vision impaired young people are very much like themselves.”
Mr. Avril says hopefully there could be better synergies between the two groups as they have to live and interact together in the same society.
The youth seminar will be held at the NIC’s conference room on Wednesday May 19 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. |
