Monday, March 29, 2010 – The top science fair projects which emerged from this year's recently concluded National Schools Science and Technology Fair will now be Saint Lucia's contenders for the regional version of the competition—the Caribbean Young Inventors Competition.
Curriculum Officer in the Ministry of Education for Natural Science Mottilal Singh says this year's successfully held science fair once again, places Saint Lucia in a strong position for the regional leg of the science fair.
“We had four best projects overall. One each from primary, lower, upper secondary and tertiary schools. The best innovative project in the primary school category went to the Millet Primary School with a washing machine that operated via an exercise machine,” Singh said. “They won the best project for primary schools last year and entered the regional competition with the home-made cooler. So there is something very good going on at the Millet Primary School. I want to say special congratulations to the teachers and students of Millet primary.”
Mr. Singh said this year schools remained consistent in creativity and inventiveness.
“For lower secondary, the best innovative project went to St. Mary's secondary. They had a project called cyber-mobile—a very creative project by the lower secondary school; that booth was very, crowded at times by both students and visitors eager to find out what the cyber-mobile was all about.”
The best innovative project went to the Choiseul Secondary School where they were actually recharging cell-phones with solar energy.”
At the tertiary level, Sir Arthur Lewis Community College won with a project based on centrifugal force.
The ministry of education is awaiting word on the way forward for the regional event.
Schools on the island submitted 110 projects at the science fair this year. |
