Monday, March 8, 2010 – The government of Taiwan in collaboration with the Soufriere Town Council has made a timely investment in the education of Soufriere students.
Last week Friday, officials from the Embassy of Taiwan, the government of Saint Lucia and the Soufriere Town Council, converged at the Bouton Combined School to witness the official handover of a state-of-the-art whiteboard system.
Taiwanese Ambassador to Saint Lucia, His Excellency Tom Chou, says when his Embassy was approached by the Soufriere Town Council administration, he saw another perfect opportunity for his government to play a leading role in enhancing educational opportunities on the island.
The installation of whiteboards at four schools in Soufriere, he explains, is proof that Taiwan holds education in high esteem.
“This will increase the capability of teachers to teach their students. This is just the beginning of our assistance to this area, and secondly, we want to express that this is a rural area, less developed and normally, people feel neglected. With our joint efforts—the local government together with the Embassy—we intend to show you that you are not neglected. We will certainly assist you with your educational development.”
Minister in the Ministry for Education and Culture, Senator the Honourable Gaspard Charlemagne, says the island's youth need leaders who are devoted to taking deliberate strides to provide them with the best opportunities for success and educational advancement.
“Before, we were restricted in what we could do with blackboards. With the whiteboards it is democratizing education, making it reach as many people and students as we possibly can. And, this is the guarantee: once you have that teaching methodology, the understanding of what you teach will be easier for the students to assimilate.”
Senator Charlemagne says, devoted partners such as the government of Taiwan, are of great importance to the government of Saint Lucia, which is actively making good on its promise to broaden the educational system, so that all students can reap benefits. |
