Thursday, March 11, 2010 – On the heels of International Women's Day which was observed on Monday, Saint Lucia's women's national football team continues to do their homeland proud.
In their bid to advance from Group C for the upcoming CONCEAL Women’s Gold Cup, Saint Lucia's women's national football team came from behind to defeat the home team Antigua 2-1 Wednesday night in a thrilling encounter.
Playing under wet conditions over at the Antigua Recreation Grounds, Saint Lucia went behind in the first ten minutes. However, the women from the Helen of the West levelled the score in the fortieth minute with a goal from Eliza Markey who capitalised on a through ball in the area.
Destined for success, the Saint Lucian women took the lead in the forty fourth minute when Vanessa Jean found the back of the net from a rebound after the Antiguan goalkeeper fumbled in the area.
Despite the wet conditions, the Saint Lucian team withstood attacks from the Antiguans throughout the second half, to claim the three points and move even closer to qualifying from group C in the CONCEAL qualifiers.
Saint Lucia's women's National Football Team will be in action again today Friday, when they face the women from the US Virgin Islands.
The Saint Lucian team is captained by Mellissa Henry; the head coach is Mr Trevor “Flecky” Anderson. |
