Wednesday, March 31, 2010 – The government of Saint Lucia with the support of the government of Japan has re-opened the Anse-La-Raye Fisheries Complex.
The recommissioning of the facility is expected to maximise the productivity of Fishermen in the Village and surrounding communities.
Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King, in speaking at the handing over ceremony this week, says the government of Saint Lucia will make good on its promise to improve the quality of life of persons living in rural areas.
This promise, the prime minister says, includes the establishment of institutions that will assist citizens to earn a decent living.
“Today’s opening of this facility represents the fulfilment of yet another area of the coordinated plan for the development of the fisheries sector in Saint Lucia and to improve the livelihood of all the fishers of Saint Lucia and their families.”
Japanese Ambassador to Saint Lucia, His Excellency Tatsuaki Iwata says his government expects increased relations with the government and people of Saint Lucia, a move, he believes, will benefit both countries.
Recently, he said, the government of Saint Lucia came to the assistance of Japan.
“Thirty years ago, 20-30 Japanese nationals were abducted from my country to North Korea. The most noted was a 14-year—who has never been returned to Japan—came from a fishing village like Anse-La-Raye. With this in mind, the government of Saint Lucia supported us by asking North Korea to return the persons abducted to Japan as early as possible. We truly appreciated that support from the prime minister, the ministry of foreign affairs and by extension, the government of Saint Lucia.”
The handing over ceremony of the Anse-La-Raye Fisheries Improvement Project was held on March 28, 2010 on the grounds of the newly-refurbished facility. |
