Monday, March 15, 2010 – Transport Minister Honourable Guy Joseph, is assuring the public that government will be implementing appropriate measures to ensure that citizens receive reliable public transportation, should the National Council on Public Transport effect a strike.
The Council has threatened to strike in protests of several issues which include the lack of a disciplinary council and a bus terminal, but Minister Joseph says the strike is unwarranted.
Minister Joseph assures that members of the public who depend on public transport as their only means of commute will not be left stranded in the event of a strike.
“I believe that good sense will prevail and that the general membership of the National Council on Public Transport will realise that they are being led down the wrong path and they will not participate. So far some of the leading transport associations have called me to indicate that they are not in support of this promised strike action and they have also said they will be out providing to the public the service that is required.”
Minister Joseph also disclosed that the transport department has over eight hundred applications pending for route permits from prospective drivers.
He noted that government has several options at its disposal if the National Council on Public Transportation makes good on its promise to strike. |
