Wednesday, March 10, 2010 – The government of Saint Lucia has been called upon to continue sourcing alternative opportunities for youth empowerment.

Saint Lucia's Commonwealth Youth Ambassador, Marcellus Cazaubon says the main thrust of the nation should be towards the holistic development of the youth particularly in the areas of science and technology.

The two industries, he explains, impacts society greatly but leaders must take the initiative to translate the existence of these industries into positive change.

“Some youth are excellent in the use of computers domestically and have super quick skills in the use of mobile technologies, but is our society any better for this? With the advancements in research and technology, is Saint Lucia a better place to live? While I applaud the sponsors and organizers of the National Schools Science Fair slated for this month, can I applaud the rate at which some of the most innovative and pragmatic solutions that come from the youth are actually developed. Are we doing enough to capitalize on the creative energies of the youth?”

Mr. Cazaubon says while Commonwealth leaders recognize the importance of youth in the decision making process, they must afford youth opportunities to play their role in the design and execution of socio-economic and educational programs being developed for them.

“Whilst my role as Commonwealth Youth Ambassador is not a paid job, my efforts in this capacity are supported by the Department of Youth and Sports. In the weeks and months ahead, I will attempt to engage as many youth and youth organizations as possible, to further plan for and to effect change for the way forward—ensuring our leaders are made accountable for the declarations that were made in our name at the Commonwealth and CARICOM levels within the last year.”

Commonwealth Day was observed on March 9, 2010, under the theme “Science, Technology and Society”.
