Monday, March 29, 2010 – Dame Sessenne who also holds the title of Saint Lucia's Queen of Culture celebrated her 96th birthday on Sunday, 28th March.
Radio Saint Lucia during its golden memories program joined Sessenne in Mon Repos during her birthday celebrations.
The “Queen of Culture” entertained her guests in song and conversation but was herself also entertained by musician Hubert 'Breeze' Fevrier who used the opportunity to honour Dame Sessenne in melody playing her a birthday song, as well as waltz and la comet numbers.
Mr. Fevrier commented on Sessenne's contribution to Saint Lucia's folk culture, noting that it was an honour to play for her on her birthday.
“Sessenne's gift is a gift from God that I doubt anyone can come along and copy. I am saddened that we did not capture more of Sessenne's talent. She has recorded only one album, but has been to my studio and sang many, many songs I’d never heard before.”
For her part the “Queen of Culture” demonstrated that her sterling talent was ageless. She took time to comment on the decline in societal values, noting that the importance of basic courtesies such as an extending a greeting was deeply inculcated in her.
“I am the type of person who will extend a greeting to whomever I come across, even though they do not reciprocate; that's my attitude, that me,” Dame Sessenne said. Dame Sessenne resides on the eastern coast of Saint Lucia, in the community of Patience, Mon Repos. |
