Tuesday, March 30, 2010 – The Central Library has embarked on the second Youth in Poetry Extravaganza. The initiative is aimed at boosting the Literary Arts in Saint Lucia.
The Central Library says taking an active role in the promotion of the arts is one of the major priorities of the Library, which has over the years celebrated the achievements of many local poets and writers including Nobel Laureates Honourable Derek Walcott and Sir Arthur Lewis.
Assistant Librarian Shermaye George says this year's activity will be better with the support of a major corporate sponsor.
“The Youth in Poetry Extravaganza” is targeted at youth 18 to 25 years. This is the second time around we are hosting it. It's one of activities of Library Week for 2010. This year, library week is being hosted in collaboration with LUCELEC—the sponsor for the prizes, Ms. George said. “What we do we ask the various community libraries to get poets to submit their poems and the best poem will be selected. We also conduct workshops for the persons who have sent in their poems.”
Ms. George says the workshops are designed to develop the literary techniques of the young poets.
“We have workshops at libraries in Soufriere, Vieux Fort, and Castries. The first workshop was conducted on Saturday 27th of March. Another workshop will be conducted at the Central Library on April 10, for persons submitting poems from the Castries basin.”
The culmination of “Youth in Poetry Extravaganza” is scheduled for April 17 at the Central Library in Castries. |
