Monday 25 October 2010  Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Honourable Stephenson King says, government plans to launch a major anti-crime initiative in the coming days.

The prime minister says while the multi faceted approach will entail a social approach, it will also involve tougher legislation against criminal offences.

“It appears like the criminals are becoming more and more daring. We now have before us a very comprehensive programme that the government will launch shortly. It will entail a number of initiatives which will give the police the responsibility to be even tougher in executing their duties not only against the criminals but against every Saint Lucian who violates the laws of this country. A lot of the petty issues which are allowed to slide by will be dealt with.”

The prime minister says government's robust anti-crime plan will consider various initiatives and will include the participation of churches and religious organisations, the media, youth,  sports groups, and other sectors of the society.

He says although the plan may create some discomfort, it is designed to maintain the safety of the entire nation and to ensure that laws of the land are respected.

“There are too many vehicles that are not licensed so the road blocks and spot checks which will be intensified by the police will to a certain extent discomfort law abiding citizens, but they will have to bear with us as we undertake this initiative as it is intended to cater for their own safety.”

Prime Minister King says government will extend a hand to all interests to be a part of this major anti-crime initiative.
