Thursday 28 October 2010  The Ministry of Housing, Urban Renewal and Local Government in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture, recently launched a four day Conflict Management Workshop at the Bay Gardens Inn.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Housing, Urban Renewal and Local Government, Blaize Nickson, says the workshop is particularly important, because it comes at a time when conflict resolution skills are needed to stem  rising incidents of crime.

“This particular project: “An Intersect oral Approach to Fostering Democratic Culture in Schools”, is a very useful exercise in terms of engendering good governance as part of our local government mandate. The project is targeting schools in particular, students and teachers, to ensure that the students understand what it is to share, to give and take, and to understand the process of consultation and dialogue among themselves.”

Funded by the Organization of American States (OAS) this workshop is a pilot programme. One of the facilitators is the Director of Global Issues Resource Centre, located in the USA.   Jennifer Batton says the project will be implemented throughout the region.

“The project is part of a larger project throughout the Caribbean in Partnership with Trinidad and Tobago and St. Vincent. This is only one component of a much larger project on fostering a democratic culture of peace throughout schools and communities.”

Participants included local secondary school students, teachers, as well as staff and officials from various government ministries.
