Tuesday 26 October 2010  The construction sector is expected to benefit from better operational standards from local contractors  as a result of the successful completion of a two-day information Seminar hosted by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Consumer Affairs.

Speaking on the importance of the seminar, Senator Honourable Tessa Mangal says the aim is to ensure that local contractors appreciate the professional requirements which are necessary to be competitive in the global environment.

“There are laws and regulations that govern construction and contractors need to be of a certain quality and competence so when a contractor is given a job he or she has to deliver what is delivered in the contract in order to receive pay for the work. A competent contractor ensure that the works are properly measured and the bill of quantities is properly done and the contract price is reasonable and profitable, a competent contractor must also ensure that the job is well managed so that workers don’t sleep on the job and still claim pay.”

Minister Mangal says the timing of the information seminar for the construction sector will strategically position local contractors to benefit from multi-million dollar projects in the country.

“With government, the business community, and private citizens engaged in various types of construction activity, it is only natural that more contractors and contracting firms will want to be involved in the sector. However, it is also very important that those who seek to get a piece of the action, understand their responsibilities.”

The two-day information seminar for the construction sector—funded by Sequa—exposed  scores of local contractors to practical presentations from several stakeholders including the Ministry of Physical Development, the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards, the Emergency Services, and the National Insurance Corporation.
