Tuesday, September 28, 2010 –  St. Lucia’s international High Jumper Leaven Spencer, says she is in top shape for her participation in the Commonwealth Games which kicks off in New Delhi on the 3rd of October.  Spencer who is part of a thirteen-member team, says 2010  is one of the best years as  a professional athlete.

Spencer’s is grateful for a  thirty thousand-dollar sponsorship cheque which she received earlier this week, by the Department of Youth and Sports, under its Elite Athlete's Programme. She says  whilst  a professional athletics career could be very rewarding, it could at the same time be very costly.

“I think having the kind of financial support as a professional athlete it could really help a lot especially when you go out and compete it is one think less I would have to worry about. I will not have to worry about financial matters and could just go out there  and compete, do my best, represent my country, let my flag fly high.”

The Department of Youth and Sports recognized that it was necessary to establish the Elite Athlete's programme, to provide financial and other technical assistance to  outstanding athletes on the island.

Acting Director of  Youth and Sports, Claudia Noel Jn. Baptiste, says the department has made a commitment to provide assistance to Leverne  “which will aid in her further development.”

Spencer revealed that this is the single biggest contribution that has been made to an elite athlete thus far.
