Tuesday, 6 October, 2010 – The Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School has begun the countdown to its 25th Anniversary celebrations. According to the school's officials, a number of activities will be shared with the wider community.
Member of staff Miss Yosha Smith says that the school, which tutors 700 students, has matured into an educational institution that the government and people of Saint Lucia can be proud of, particularly in regard to its record of academic performance and in producing upstanding citizens.
“Our 25th anniversary will be held on the 26th of October. On that particular day we will be having a ceremony, a parade and an exhibition of our journey of the 25 years that we have been in existence. Over the 25 years we have seen the school grow from a little known not very established institution, to an institution which produces productive citizens. We have students who have been manufactured at Leon Hess and as a result of their experience they have contributed positively to our Saint Lucian society and even beyond Saint Lucia.”
Ms. Smith says the school pursues a co-ed model and boasts a curriculum of well over a dozen subjects including technical and vocational training.
“The most striking feature about the school is that we aim to develop the whole child, not just academically but other aspects of their lives.”
The theme for the school's anniversary is “Celebrating a journey of service and achievements, anticipating a promising future”.
Last Friday the staff and students of the school headed by the environmental club and Mr. Allan Gabriel engaged in a community clean-up activity.
From October 11th to the 15th students of the school will square off in the Elocution Competition, some of the activities leading up to the grand day on the 26th of October. The Leon Hess Secondary School was built by the Hess family at the behest of Saint Lucia's former prime minister Sir John Compton, and was officially opened in 1985.
