a 1600 beds medical center and teaching hospital, employing over 3,800 people
and receiving approximately 5,000 patient-visits daily. According to the
Agreement, both medical institutions agree to undertake a comprehensive exchange
of information on the health sector, provision of international volunteers and
to facilitate the increase in knowledge of health care professionals through the
conduct of seminars and professional training and exchanges of staff on the
basis of equality and reciprocity. Since then, the Changhua Christian Hospital
has hosted three-month intensive training programmes for two groups of seven
members of the medical, nursing and technical staff from St. Jude Hospital.
Presently one laboratory staff from St. Jude Hospital will soon start an
eight-week training programme. All the mentioned programmes serve as essential
measures for the capacity-building of St. Jude Hospital. Initiatives of further
training will be proposed and discussed in the next couple of months.
Based on the same Agreement, the Changhua Christian Hospital pledges to send
volunteers to serve at St. Jude Hospital. The first delegation of Taiwanese
volunteers offered their service to St. Jude Hospital’s patients from 21st
November to 12th December, 2009; the second from 16th January to 5th February ,
2010; and the third from 10th to 30th April , 2010. Respectively members of the
three delegations returned to Taiwan with gratitude for the assistance and
hospitality they had received from the staff of St. Jude Hospital in general and
the working experiences they had acquired during their service which already
broadened their vision and knowledge and would surely have tremendous impact on
their future careers.
Following the successful model between St. Jude Hospital and Changhua Christian
Hospital, the Milton Kato Memorial Hospital in St Vincent and Grenadines will
soon conclude an Agreement of Twinning with Changhua Christian Hospital.
This new model of international cooperation focusing on training and volunteer
in the field of medical and health scopes has won commendation from both the
governments of Saint Lucia and the Republic of China (Taiwan) and their peoples
alike.
