Wednesday, January 27, 2010 – Law enforcement personnel will receive five new mobile patrol vehicles from the Taiwanese government this week to aid them in their fight against increasing crime.
Government has also procured two high-powered speed boats for the marine police.
Home Affairs and National Security Minister, Senator Honourable Guy Mayers, has also announced the introduction of CCTV cameras in strategic locations around the island before the end of this year.
He says the British government has already committed to training local police in preparation for the CCTV technology.
“CCTV cameras don't go to sleep or take a lunch break, neither do they have to shelter when its raining. These are extra electronic eyes that the police will have. Once they are strategically located, it will oversee the area 24/7, and assist the police tremendously,” Mayers said.
Minister Mayers also announced that sixty police recruits are currently in training.
He says intensifying patrols in and around crime hot spots will be one of the main areas of focus going forward.
“The police have been mandated to take some decisive action in various areas around the island. However, I am not at liberty to disclose some of the operational measures that they will implement but they have been told in no uncertain terms to be firm and decisive, get in there and get the job done.”
Minister Mayers says ensuring the safety of citizens and visitors is government’s top priority at this time. |
