Wednesday, January 11, 2010 – Minister for Education Honourable Arsene James say Cuba's première Literacy Program called the “Yes I Can Literacy Program”, may soon be adapted to Saint Lucia's education system.
The minister just back from an official visit to Cuba led by prime minister Stephenson King says the Cuban program may well be the answer to addressing the island's lingering problems of illiteracy.
Minister James noted Cuba has a literacy program which has recorded a high rate of success. He says this program is currently being adapted around the region with similar results.
“They are now introducing this program to a number of countries around the world, including, Venezuela, Canada, and Grenada; right now attempts are ongoing to adapt it to suit St. Lucia,” the minister said.
Mr. James disclosed that government would like to tackle the program at the levels of adults and at the primary school level.
“We have agreed that we will embrace the program after a Cuban team assesses the literacy situation in Saint Lucia. They will need to come out and diagnose what our problems are. Last year we conducted the literacy survey and that survey will give us an indication as to our rate of literacy.”
With that scientific yard stick the ministry is expected to moved speedily to effect the “Yes I Can” Literacy Program”. |
