Wednesday, January 13, 2009 – The Small Enterprise Development Unit (SEDU) is encouraging small business people and aspiring entrepreneurs (say ontra-Pren-ers) to take advantage of its many courses during the new semester starting January 25.

Courses in Marketing and Financial Management, Peach Tree Accounting and Business Development are being offered by SEDU as the unit continues to equip local entrepreneurs to grow their business and remain competitive in this ever changing global environment.

Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Consumer Affairs Peter Lorde says SEDU has devised affordable  payment plans for the various courses.

“We are encouraging small business people and all individuals who are considering small business as a viable alternative, to get engaged in those courses because they are cost effective and you can use those courses to further yourself because they are endorsed by the University of the West Indies and the Ministry of Education. We are also presently speaking with Monroe Collage which has indicated willingness to accept people who have done those courses, into their study programmes.”

Mr. Lorde says courses offered by also afford small business people and aspiring entrepreneurs with the right approach and attitude towards business.

The permanent secretary also emphasised the importance of small business people creating strategic alliances to increase their profits ad competitiveness.

“With the advent of the CSME, what has happened is that the market space has expanded so there is no longer a situation where if someone from Dominica comes to Saint Lucia to do business he/she is not in the local market. Because of CSME, that individual is still in the local market, so our local entrepreneurs have to understand that when they go into business, they are not only competing with businesses down the street, but they are also competing with business people in other islands.”

People interested in enrolling in any of the courses offered by the Small Enterprise Development Unit (SEDU) can contact the unit to make arrangements.
