Tuesday, January 12, 2010  Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Honourable Stephenson King, is back on the island following an official state visit to the Republic of Cuba.

During his visit, prime minister King met with the Cuban leader Raul Castro and held discussions with senior members of the Cuban government on matters of mutual interests.

Government's press secretary Mr. Darnley Lebourne, says the Saint Lucian delegation which included the ministers for health and education, were able to accomplish a lot during the five-day visit.

“From all indications the visit was highly successful because apart from the fact that the Saint Lucian delegation was treated with the utmost respect and courtesy, there were very frank and fruitful discussions that will have a lot of implications for some of our key development areas like health, agriculture, education, tourism, and sports to a lesser extent. Prime Minister King was also very keen to express to the Cubans our gratitude for their support over the years and also our resoluteness in supporting Cuba as a Caribbean country.”

The press secretary said prime minister King also reaffirmed the Saint Lucian government's committed to deepening and strengthening relations with Havana.

Prime Minister King and his delegation visited Cuba at the behest of the Cuban President.

Cuba and St. Lucia established diplomatic relations on August 23, 1979, and promote a fruitful collaboration in the areas of health and education.

The ministers for health and education have scheduled a press conference for later this week to provide the citizenry with further information on their visit to Cuba.
