Wednesday, January 20, 2010  Social Transformation Minister, Honourable Lenard Montoute, says government will continue to invest heavily in various social programmes this year.

The HOPE programme, which is being administered by the Saint Lucia Social Development Fund, will remain a top priority, according to Minister Montoute.

He says government will inject additional resources in an effort to build on the successes of the HOPE project in 2010.

“The HOPE project made a big impact, particularly in the final quarter of last year where we had well in excess of eight hundred people employed under this programme, the majority of whom were young people. We were able to embark on quite a number of diverse projects,” Montoute said.

Minister Montoute says officials responsible for the implementation of HOPE, are presently looking at the possibility of adding other components to the effectiveness and sustainability of the programme.

He says the HOPE programme is designed to prepare the participants for future employment while making them more independent individuals.

“This is a programme which I think has already created a very big impact and we are looking forward to continuing it,” Montoute said. “But you would appreciate that there are some challenges with regard to the resources. However, recognising the importance of the HOPE programme we are already in discussions with the ministry of finance to find ways to continue and improve the programme on a long term basis.”

The HOPE programme is expected to undertake several new social infrastructure improvement projects in the coming weeks.

However, several HOPE administered projects are ongoing like the rehabilitation of the Vigie playing field.

The programme has also found jobs for several unemployed individuals in both the private and public sector.
