Monday, January 25, 2010 – CARICOM, in a recent press release is said to have pledged its continuing solidarity with its fellow member state Haiti, which has been devastated as a result of the earthquake on January 12.
The regional grouping has responded to the plight of the Haitians by mobilizing both regional and international mechanisms for emergency assistance, in collaboration with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), which is responsible for co-coordinating the regional response. In September, 2009, Haiti became the latest CARICOM member to join CDEMA.
Reports out of Haiti indicate that the country has now shifted emphasis from the initial phase of search and rescue to caring for hundreds of thousands of displaced survivors.
CARICOM Chairman, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica, led a fact-finding mission to Haiti on January 15, after the catastrophic earthquake and series of aftershocks on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. |
