Friday January 25, 2009 – Saint Lucia's biodiversity has been placed in the limelight with the recent launch of a publication highlighting the birds of Saint Lucia, including some endemic species.
This publication is a follow up to the first publication in 2008, entitled “Birds of Saint Lucia”.
Minister for agriculture Honourable Ezekiel Joseph, says as the agency charged with sensitising Saint Lucians on sustainable biodiversity, the ministry is pleased that the book will be disseminated to schools.
“We are blessed and I am sure you here will agree, with a number of fauna and flora that are critical to our diversification programme and are critical to our biodiversity program.”
The minister says the book will be valuable to both locals and visitors.
"The objective at the time and currently, is to provide Saint Lucians and visitors with information that will educate them on the number of birds we have in Saint Lucia, and to enable them to be able to identify and describe these birds.”
Minister Joseph says the ministry of agriculture has embarked on several sensitization drives to build public appreciation for the Amazona Versicolour or National Bird, and the iguana.
The initiative was undertaken by Mr. Denys Springer, the author, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of China on Taiwan. |
