Monday, January 18, 2010  The 17th observance of Nobel Laureate Week was officially opened Sunday, with a cultural extravaganza attended by Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy, Honourable Derek Walcott and family members of Sir Arthur Lewis.

Dame Pearlette called on Saint Lucians both at home and abroad, to cherish the tradition of excellence, which two distinguished sons of the soil—Honourable Derek Walcott and Sir Arthur Lewis—have exemplified.

“Nobel Laureate Week has entered its 17th year this year thus positioning itself to become perhaps one of the longest serving initiatives in contemporary Saint Lucia. After years of wondering how long we would  have been able to sustain the nation's interest in the observance which was never able to attract mass public appeal, we are beginning to see signs that the observance and the spirit that drives it  are beginning to etch themselves on the  national psyche.”

A youth video conference organized by the Homecoming 2010 committee was held on Monday as part of activities for Nobel Laureate Week.

The hosting of the National Awards of Excellence by the Ministry of Education and Culture at the National Cultural Centre, will take place on Tuesday, January 19, at 10am.
