Guyana comes to the assistance of Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Thursday, December 2, 2010 –  The government of Guyana has decided to give financial assistance to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Saint Lucia as the two countries continue their recovery efforts after the passage of Hurricane Tomas last month.

Reports from Georgetown state that the government will give US$200,000 to the two countries –US$100,000 each.

The Guyana government has also expressed the hope that the international community would respond to calls by Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines for assistance, since the two countries suffered severe damage from the hurricane.

Saint Lucia and Guyana have enjoyed a long-standing relationship for many years.

Meanwhile, Saint Lucia`s tourism partners are continuing to provide assistance to aid the country with its recovery efforts.  

So far, a number of international and local partners including airlines and hoteliers have made numerous donations including bottled water and food supplies.

The latest contributor is the US based Jet Blue Airways, which has donated approximately 400 cases of bottled water which is to be handed over to officials of the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) for onward distribution to households.

Public Relations Manager at the Saint Lucia Tourist Board (SLTB) Mr John Emmanuel says the overwhelming support from the various Tourism partners indicate their level of commitment to the country.

“We appreciate the efforts of our tourism partners, not only in terms of them coming to do business with us but to critically support us as a destination with their continued presence by means of them continuing to fly into Saint Lucia.

“In the case of Jet Blue and the various cruise lines, we are happy that we can be provided with the level of support and commitment that we have thus far received in our attempt to fully recover post Hurricane Tomas.”

Emmanuel was at the time echoing the sentiments expressed earlier by Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King.
