Tuesday 7 December 2010 Government is considering all options in its bid to acquire suitable land to relocate and resettle people displaced by Hurricane Tomas into new housing settlements.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Physical Development, Environment and Housing Mr. Blaize Nixon, says the challenge lies in finding suitable areas which do not present major vulnerabilities for such projects.
In terms of land acquisition we have to look at all options. Land within the ownership of the crown would , for obvious reasons, be a priority because it simplifies the entire process because there would be no need for acquisition because the land is government owned.
Mr. Nixon says the possibility that there may be need to procure some private properties is also on the table.
We are looking at privately owned lands as well, because currently there is a dearth of developed land given our mountainous topography and our flat areas are really the flood plains of the rivers. In the first instance we will look at crown lands which would certainly simplify the whole process of relocation and resettlement planning and construction of the housing units.
The ministry is already working tirelessly he says, hoping to tackle the multi-million dollar relocation project within the shortest possible time.
