Monday 18 October 2010 – The Government of Saint Lucia has congratulated Saint Lucian born West Indies all rounder Darren Sammy on his appointment as captain of the West Indies men's senior team.
The announcement—made by the WICB on Monday—fuelled jubilation in every nook and cranny of the country.
Sports Minister Honourable Lenard “Spider” Montoute speaking to the GIS from London en route to Malta on official state visit, says the continued success, discipline and dedication of Darren Sammy is worthy of emulation by all of the nation's youth.
“As minister responsible for Sports in Saint Lucia let me express congratulations on behalf of the government and people of Saint Lucia to Darren Sammy on his appointment as captain of the West Indies Cricket Team. This is truly a historic and remarkable accomplishment which ought to be celebrated by all Saint Lucians. This unprecedented achievement by Darren augers well for the motivation, inspiration and psyche of every young Saint Lucian sports person and should serve as testimony to the future generation that hard work, discipline and dedication really pays.”
The West Indies Cricket Board in making the announcement, indicated that Darren Sammy will serve as West Indies captain until the end of the Digicel Series 2011.
In accepting the appointment Darren Sammy said: “Being appointed West Indies captain is an honour and distinction which I will treat with the highest regard and dignity”.
Sammy`s first duty as captain of the senior team will be a test match against Sri Lanka which begins on November 6.
