Monday, 15 November, 2010 – Minister for Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities, Hon. Guy Joseph, met last week in Forestierre with Canada-based organization Global Medic—a relief aid organization operated by paramedics with a history of going into countries which have been affected by natural disasters. Mr. Joseph was in Forestierre with the organization to oversee the installation of several water purification units.
“They are here assisting us in setting up a water resource using the natural river water but treating it to the standard where it is good for drinking. It is our intention to set up four of these units throughout the constituency of Castries South East. We have set up one in Marc and one in Forestierre. We will not be serving the public with water for washing or cooking but for drinking.”
Joseph says residents of the area or anyone who is unable to obtain water is welcomed to retrieve the purified water.
“We would not allow anyone to come with drums but with bottles and buckets where they can collect a certain amount of water. It is also our intention to get a truck with a one-thousand gallon tank to enable water distribution to some of the more elderly folks who are not as mobile as the youth. The water is available. It is good for drinking. I actually drank some from the Marc reservoir last night.”
Mr. Joseph applauded Global Medic for its timely assistance, indicating that his intention is to have these units in Ravine Poison and Odsan as soon as possible.
The team also intends to get a water purification unit into the Fond St. Jacques/Soufriere area.
