French teritorries contribute generously to Saint Lucia's recovery efforts

Thursday 25 November 2010 – A barge from the neighboring French Territories recently brought in relief items—worth over one hundred thousand Euros—for onward distribution to persons affected by hurricane Tomas.
French Ambassador to the OECS States, Michel Prom, and other officials from the Regional Council of Guadeloupe were on hand at the barge’s arrival.
“Regarding Hurricane Tomas, we have sent a team and helicopter in the first day following the hurricane. We also coordinated spontaneous assistance from the French departments of Martinique, Guadeloupe and Guyana. I think that shows that there is solidarity among the different islands of this region.”
Minister for Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities, Hon. Guy Joseph said Saint Lucians have much to be thankful for, given the level of support received from regional and governments and organizations.
“On behalf of the government and people of Saint Lucia,we express special gratitude to the French regions of Martinique, Guadeloupe and French Guyana. From the time they've visited us about two weeks ago to now, we have seen an outpouring of aid and assistance from the French territories—both from a governmental stand point and also from individuals. “I think as we assess our situation we would recognize that the French territories have really been good neighbors to Saint Lucia in that they have responded in an overwhelming manner in terms of their assistance.”
The relief items included food, bottled water, hygiene kits, water tanks, mosquito nets and pipes.
Minister Joseph says these items will be handed over to WASCO, the Red Cross and NEMO – the agencies responsible for distributing such supplies. |
