Monday 25 October 2010 – Saint Lucia`s Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King, in paying tribute to former Barbadian Prime Minister David Thompson, says the Caribbean region has lost a true statesman.
Mr King says the Government and People of Saint Lucia share with our sister island nation of Barbados, profound grief and sadness at the untimely death of the former Barbadian prime minister.
Mr Thompson died on Saturday, October 23, after suffering from pancreatic cancer.
Prime Minister King who shared a long-standing friendship with Mr Thompson, described the former prime minister of Barbados, as a real Caribbean man who always rallied for the integration movement.
“He was a strong advocate for regionalism and a strong integrationist who believed that the mobilisation of the youth in the region would help in fulfilling the dream of Caribbean Integration; his death is great loss for us. He was a true friend of Saint Lucia considering the fact that his wife is a Saint Lucian.
“For me, it’s a loss of a dear friend who cared for Saint Lucia. On many occasions when we met he would ask about developments in Saint Lucia. The Caribbean has lost a great leader; a man of commitment, a man of conviction, and a man of tremendous sincerity.”
Prime Ministers King and Thompson both emerged through the regional youth movement to become leaders of their respective nations within six months of each other—on September 7th, 2007, and January 16th, 2008, respectively.
Prime Minister David John Howard Thompson passed away at the age of 48.
