Thursday, February 18, 2010 As part of activities to observe its 50th anniversary, officials of the Boys' Training Centre (BTC), have embarked on a series of initiatives aimed at developing a sense of responsibility and civic duty in the wards.

Director of the Boys Training Centre, Leonard Terrence, says much effort was made to ensure this week's itinerary of events, embrace general themes of independence.  In that regard, the BTC collaborated with the Gros-Islet Town Council, in facilitating a beautification project of the Council's administrative building which also houses the district court.

“We are trying to do some painting, trying to repair some benches, trying to make the place look presentable for the Judges so that they can render justice when they come in. Tomorrow we will have the main ceremony to recognize the commitment to all who have contributed to the Centre—those who have not turned away during our darkest hour. We just want to say thank you for what they have done for us.”

Chairman of the Gros-Islet Town Council, Ainsley Fontenelle, says he is heartened by the gratitude of the wards of the BTC.  He pledged the organization's continued support in facilitating more incentives to encourage the boys' personal and social development.

Mr. Fontenelle says this initiative is timely, as the Gros-Islet Town Council prepares to formally open the newly refurbished community park.

“What we are hoping is that we can keep close ties with the BTC; in the future when we have other projects we can bring them on board. As you can see, they are young guys, obedient, and very easy to work with.”

The Boys' Training Centre has collaborated with the Gros-Islet Secondary School to host a gospel concert, featuring Che Campeche as the main act, on Saturday evening at the Gros-Islet Secondary School grounds at 7:30 pm.

Part of the proceeds will go towards the institution's contribution towards the St. Jude Hospital restoration project.
