The small table welcomes condolences for a giant of a man

Friday, February 12, 2010 –  The University of the West Indies continues to mourn the death of Professor Emeritus, Professor The Honourable Rex Nettleford, who passed away on February 2nd, 2010.  Prof. Nettleford was a renowned intellectual who made a major contribution to the development of Caribbean politics and the trade union movement.  He served as advisor to many governments and regional organizations.  A cultural icon, Professor Nettleford also promoted Caribbean cultural forms through dance and music, establishing the National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica and the University Singers.

 

In tribute to Professor. Nettleford, the University of the West Indies Open Campus St Lucia has set up a small display at the Open Campus Library and has made a condolence book available to the public for signature.  Her Excellency the Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy was the first to sign the book, referring to Professor. Nettleford as she was followed by the prime minister, The Honourable Speaker of the House and other members of parliament.

 

Professor Nettleford will be laid to rest in his native Jamaica following a funeral service at the University Chapel at the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies on Tuesday February 16th, 2010.

 

Members of the public are encouraged to pay tribute to this Caribbean giant, by signing the condolence book which will be available in St Lucia until February 23rd, 2010.
