Friday, February 5, 2010 – The opportunities for forging closer ties not only between the governments of Saint Lucia and Taiwan but also among communities, were aptly demonstrated last Friday, when the town of Gros-Islet signed a twinning agreement with the township of Lion in Pintung County, Republic of China -Taiwan.
Parliamentary representative for Gros-Islet, who is the minister for social transformation, described the event as one that will promote community building and cultural exchanges.
“I believe that the relationship between Taiwan and Saint Lucia is one that is very dear to the hearts of many Saint Lucians – in fact all Saint Lucians because of the history of our relationship and the mutual benefits of our relationships between our two countries. For me it is indeed a particular honour to receive you as an indigenous people.”
A delegation of eight travelled from Taiwan to witness the signing, on Gros-Islet’s 25th anniversary of township.
The delegation also paid a courtesy call on prime minister Honourable Stephenson King, who officially welcomed the visitors to Saint Lucia.
While in Saint Lucia, the Taiwanese officials will meet with various government officials.
The delegation departs for Taiwan on Thursday January 11 |
