Friday, February 12, 2010 – Saint Lucia is to welcome a National Council for Social Reform soon.
This announcement was made by Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King during the handing over ceremony of new vehicles to the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force.
Prime Minister King explained that the Council will embrace both governmental and non-governmental institutions which are mandated to implement initiatives for social development.
“The Boys' Training Centre, the Upton Gardens Girls' Centre, the Saint Lucia Crisis Centre and the National Transit Home—all those institutions—must be brought together under one umbrella organisation, together with other initiatives such as CAPS, to have a focused approach to dealing with crime and other issues affecting our social fabric, in an effort to provide the social re-engineering that is necessary to dismantle criminal elements embedded in the social fabric of our society.”
Prime Minister King says the modification of the National Strategic Plan on Crime forms part of the mandate of the National Council for Social Reform. Prime Minister King says these and other initiatives, should serve as a clear indication that his government will not waiver in the struggle to restore peace and security to Saint Lucia.
Prime Minister King has also instructed the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force to use all resources at its disposal to intercept and swiftly halt activities of criminals.
“The Council, will be led by government but it will be one that encourages the opposition party to join an entity which has parliamentary and legal support to deal with the matter of crime from a national standpoint,” the prime minister said.
Prime Minister King says he will restore peace and a sense of security to all as guaranteed by the Constitution of Saint Lucia. |
