Wednesday, February 3, 2010 – Tributes continue to pour in, in honour of Caribbean luminary Professor, the Honourable Rex Nettleford, whose passing on Tuesday night, has plunged the entire community of the University of the West Indies into mourning. Professor Nettleford died after suffering a heart attack on 27th of January, while on university business in the United States.
Head of the UWI Open Campus, Miss Veronica Simon, said the fact that the professor had been engaged in UWI affairs until the end, speaks to his life-long commitment to education and development of the nation until the end.
“Professor Vice Chancellor Emeritus Rex Nettleford has spent practically all of his adult life at the University of the West Indies, except for these three years where he was a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford. So he has really devoted a lifetime to the University of the West Indies. He has served with 5 chancellors and he himself served as Vice Chancellor. He regarded Sir Arthur Lewis actually as his mentor having had the opportunity to work with the late Nobel Laureate.”
The Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) has also paid tribute to Professor Rex Nettleford given his extensive contribution to the region. |
