Friday, February 5, 2010 – Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King has commended the many Saint Lucians, who in whatever way, have contributed to the relief efforts in the earthquake-ravaged country of Haiti.
Prime Minister King says, citizens of Saint Lucia have responded to the crisis with a spirit of generosity and goodwill through various charitable organisations.
In expressing his own commitment to the relief effort, Mr King encouraged Saint Lucians to continue to lend a helping hand to our sister CARICOM member state.
“The needs of our brothers and sisters whether for medical attention, food, shelter, proper sanitation or money are numerous, I would like to all citizens to make a contribution in whatever way that you can to the relief efforts being organised by the various charitable organisations operating on behalf of Haiti.”
The prime minister also announced that the government of Saint Lucia has established a special committee made up of “The Friends of Haiti” to coordinate a civil response to the Haiti disaster. The committee will undertake various projects to bring immediate relief while focusing on the rebuilding efforts.
Mr King also assures that government will continue to work through CARICOM to provide assistance to Haiti in whatever way possible.
“As a reflection of the spirit of charity exemplified by Saint Lucians the government has made a contribution of EC$500,000 directly to the people of Haiti. In addition, government through the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO), and in collaboration with local healthcare providers, has dispatched a team to assist directly with the relief efforts.”
The local delegation which was headed by NEMO Director Dawn French returned to the island on Sunday 7th of February.
The GIS will host a special press conference on Wednesday, where the delegation will update the nation on its mission to Haiti. |
