Monday, February, 1, 2010 – The government of Saint Lucia has reported the month of January, as one of the most successful months to-date, in its efforts to remain vigilant in reducing crime and violence on the island.

Throughout the past month, the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force conducted a number of raids in the inner Castries communities; an effort authorities believe, will quell the number of violent incidences around the city.

Minister for national security, Senator Guy Mayers, says government is determined to continually deepen its partnership with the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force to implement the best strategies in order to realize law, order and stability in the near future.

“The security of the country is obviously of paramount importance and the number one priority of the government. A number of requests have been made of the government and we are working on it. This week, we will see the handing over of two new vehicles that the police have requested to assist them in their short-term plans,” Mayers said.

“We have also ordered and signed contracts from two new fast boats to assist the marine police and those we are expecting to be delivered at the end of June.”

Police Commissioner Ausbert Regis, says the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force is ordered to place national security at the top of its agenda. In so doing, much discussion is being held to safely implement the various focal areas of the national crime prevention program.

Among these, he says, improved night lighting, the introduction of CCTV in the city of Castries, and the modification of the witness protection program will receive immediate attention.

“We are receiving a lot of assistance from members of the public, and no information has yet to be compromised. We want to continue to encourage persons to provide relevant information, because at the end of the day, this country belongs to all of us, and we must have a vested interest in its safety and security.

Meantime, the government of Saint Lucia intends to meet with officials of the Development Control Authority (DCA), and the ministry of physical planning, to discuss the demolition of abandoned buildings in Castries, which Senator Mayers calls “hideaways for criminals.”
