Tuesday, February 16, 2010 – The Archdiocese of Castries has joined the rest of the local community in relief efforts for Haiti.
This past weekend, the Saint Joseph the Worker Parish (Gros-Islet), held a benefit concert for Haiti—proceeds of which will go directly to the Roman Catholic church's social organisation, CARITAS, to minister to the needs of Haitians living in desperate circumstances.
Parish Priest of the Saint Joseph the Worker church, Father Stephen Quinlan, says the Catholic community has been touched by the plight of Haitians and as such the Benefit Concert for Haiti was conceptualized to raise much needed funds to support the church's financial contribution to its counterparts in the earthquake-ravaged country.
“I would like to thank His Grace the Archbishop, who first initiated this response among the Catholic community, encouraging us to firstly take up a collection and to see in what other creative ways we can help the people of Haiti. In four weeks, we were able to put on a concert.”
Managing Director of 1st National Bank, Carlton Glasgow, says his institution is very proud to have been the main sponsor of the concert for Haiti.
He has made a call on the entire nation to play its part in the restoration of the Haitian community by contributing and participating in all initiatives for Haiti.
“This evening has surpassed all expectations. When we were approached to sponsor, I thought it would just be another concert but the cause is what moved me and we thought, let's do this! Tonight has revealed a number of performances not the least of them was our own choral group and I was surprised!”
The Benefit Concert for Haiti was held at the Gaiety on Rodney Bay last Saturday, 13th of February. |
