Tuesday, February 23, 2010  The governments of Saint Lucia and Taiwan have, through the ministry of communications and works, constructed a new road in the Cacoa, Babonneau community.

Parliamentary representative for the Babonneau constituency, Honourable Ezekiel Joseph says, the project brings into focus the problem residents of his community face in accessing utility and emergency services when needed.

Minister Joseph says, he will continue to partner with other ministries and organizations, to accomplish his mission of refurbishing more roads in the Babonneau constituency during this financial year.

“My colleagues are telling me that I have no real problem with roads. It's true when you drive on the main road and it's okay. The problem we have in Babonneau is the community roads which are in a  deplorable condition. We need to assist residents by providing better roads that will make them feel more comfortable.”

Taiwanese Ambassador to Saint Lucia, His Excellency Tom Chou says, he is proud to be affiliated with the development of the Babonneau community, and as such will work with the government of Saint Lucia, on its mission to improve the standard of living of residents in neglected areas.

“We do a lot of grassroot projects such as the one here today. We want to improve the quality of life of people living in the rural areas and also, in the process, we are creating  job opportunities for the local community.”

The La Vern Spencer Road—named after Saint Lucia's and the Caribbean's première female high jumper—was completed at a cost of $376,000.00 and was formally opened on Friday, February 19, 2010.
